PRINCE2 Training – Introduction to PRINCE2 Principles

The PRINCE2 method is founded on four mutually dependent components of principles, themes, processes, and the project environment. In this post we will give an overview of the PRINCE2 Principles and their significance in PRINCE2 training.

The popularity of PRINCE2 training is largely because PRINCE2 is universal, generic and based on proven principles. Organizations worldwide and from many sectors chose to adopt PRINCE2 as a standard because it can improve their organizational capability and maturity across many areas of business activity. The PRINCE2 training course will teach you in depth about the seven principles at the heart of this project management method. These principles are so crucial to the project that in fact, unless all seven principles are applied, it is not a genuine PRINCE2 project.

The Seven PRINCE2 Principles:

1) Continued Business Justification:

A PRINCE2 project needs to have a documented business justification with clear benefits to start the project. The justification can change throughout the lifetime of the project, but there should always be a valid and relevant justification.

2) Learn From Experience:

Project members should learn from previous experiences – internal or external to the team – in order to ensure the project is delivered in the best possible way. Team members should identify lessons learned, document and act upon them throughout the project.

3) Defined Roles and Responsibilities:

This principle is simply about having well-defined roles in the project. This allows the project members to know what is expected of them and of others in the organisation in respect of the project. A well organised team that had PRINCE2 training will represent the interests of all project stakeholders effectively.

4) Manage by Stages:

This is an effective approach to divide the entire project into a number of management stages, with a high-level long-term plan, and a more detailed short-term plan. This makes it easier to monitor, control, and plan each stage. It also helps to ensure that principle 1, Continued Business Justification, is maintained throughout the lifetime of the project.

5) Manage by Exception:

Tolerance levels and control processes are defined in advance (for example: budget exceptions, completion dates overdue, scope variation, etc) in order to allow each role in the project organisation to make the right decisions without involving senior management unnecessarily.

6) Focus on Product:

A quality delivered product is at the heart of of a successful project. This quality is defined before starting any project activities that are meant to produce it. The quality requirements of the product drive the scope and planning of the project and defines its success criteria.

7) Tailor to Suit the Project Environment:

As a universal project management methodology, PRINCE2 is designed to be tailored to suit the unique project characteristics like size, environment, complexity, and priority. PRINCE2 training will help you do this right for your project.
